The new Criminal Procedure Code was published in the Official Gazette on October 12, 2000. The bill had been sent to the Chamber of Deputies on June 13, 1995 and after intense and relatively quick processing, it was promulgated by the President of the Republic, Mr. Ricardo Lagos Escobar, and the Minister of Justice, Mr. José Antonio Gómez Urrutia on September 29, 2000. The culmination of the work initiated by the Minister of Justice at the time, Mrs. María Soledad Alvear V. was completed. Its validity, in accordance with article 484, will be staggered in the different regions of the country, beginning in the regions of Coquimbo and Araucania on December 16, 2000.
