Abstract

The system established in the postwar period has proven to be unsuitable for regulating security relations between the countries of the hemisphere. Latin American realities lead us to distinguish the territorial areas to deal with these problems. We must then ask ourselves: a) How to define the security spheres in the hemisphere? Is it possible to define a specific area in the South American region? b) Is there a common problem for the South American countries? What are the main security issues and what is their current status? c) What are the likely trends of the main South American security problems? How can policies be developed that contribute to establishing a security system that emphasizes shared interests among the countries of South America? And, finally, how to reconcile these shared interests with those of the United States? This work attempts to help answer these questions from a South American perspective.
