Abstract

One of the most serious international crises facing the world today is the conflict in Central America, the escalation of which could lead to an armed confrontation of proportions. It is not easy to envision a viable solution, given the complexity of the situation. There have been numerous peace initiatives, including the so-called Contadora process. Since its establishment in 1983, Grupo Contadora has offered new hope for a solution to the conflict in Central America that stands out perhaps as the only promising way to achieve a comprehensive negotiated settlement. It indicates new directions in the foreign policy of an important group of countries, which could have considerable repercussions for the future, as in the case of Latin American regional cooperation. The process has achieved some results, but not its essential objective: the diplomatic solution of the Central American conflict.
