Ergonomic evaluation of mental workload and psychosocial risk factors of jobs in proffesional, technical and administrative staff of a private centre for mental health rehabilitation

Abstract

Conceptual Framework: A lot of scientific research exists in Latin America related to the theme of work
responsibility, pyscho-social risk factors within the workplace and quality of life, that has used diverse
methodologies aimed at evaluating the consequences on workers' health. The Purpose of this study is to
investigate the causes of stress in workers of a mental health rehabilitation centre. Method: The study is
a descriptive exploratory. Data was collected through an anonymous questionnaire given to a group of
20 workers, the sample consisted of 18 workers who returned the questionnaire: 14 professionals and
technicians and 4 administrative staff. We used a questionnaire based on a method that assesses NASA
TLX workload and SUSESO Questionnaire - ISTAS 21, short version, which evaluates psychosocial risk
factors at work. Results: Professional and Technical staff, 78,6% of them perceived high mental workload
and more than 57% perceived the 6 sub-dimensions of the questionnaire SUSESO - ISTAS 21 with a
factor of high risk. 75% of Administrative staff perceived high mental workload and in the questionnaire
SUSESO - ISTAS 21, 50% of them perceived 2 sub-dimensions with a factor of high risk. Discussion:
In Health Institutions, it is basic to worry about the organizational structure and to qualify the workers
in techniques of preventing stress and promoting healthy life styles. Occupational therapists must ask
ourselves the challenge of expanding our field of action in the prevention and treatment, of occupational
diseases related to mental workload.
