Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the perception of caregivers of children diagnosed or with autism spectrum disorder suspicion about the trajectories they take searching for health services’ information and treatment for their children. Method: Descriptive study of qualitative analysis, in which six mothers of children were interviewed and the data submitted to content analysis. Results: Three categories emerged regarding the mothers’ experiences and trajectories taken: perception of the first signs, the diagnosis, and searching for treatments. Mothers identify signs of autism early in the child's life. Obstacles in the diagnostic process delay the search for treatment and increase their anxiety about what will happen to their children. Conclusion: These data highlighted the need for further discussion on the structuring and training of the public health network so that children are identified early and that families obtain better reception, information, and access to the necessary treatments for their children with suspicion or diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder.
