Abstract

This study aimed to understand the use and definition of the concepts of territory and community and identify how they are expressed in the professional practice of Occupational Therapy in Chile. Data collection took place in two stages: in the first, a conceptual literature review was carried out in journals, databases and books of great circulation in Latin America, between 1990 and 2018, and interviews with the two most recurrent authors in the selected publications; in the second, participant observation of the work of occupational therapists in a non-governmental organization was carried out, in addition to interviews with professionals and social actors involved in the practice. The results showed that the term community, more used in the field, was incorporated in the 1970s, composing the movement for democracy in the country, as territory began to be used in the 1990s with the implementation of public policies; in practice, the actions correspond to both the proposed community work, aimed at strengthening social participation, and community intervention, demonstrating the stiffening of technical action as a result of the models proposed by government programs. Noteworthy is the risk of framing territorial-community actions in procedures predetermined by specific programs and/or models and the need to overcome the use of the terms territory and community only as a physical space for professional activity.
