Abstract

Objective: The study aims to investigate how, and which restructurings occurred in the interventions and daily professional routine of occupational therapists in hospital settings because of the pandemic and also to verify how the occupational therapist operates in assisting patients infected by COVID-19. Method: Exploratory, descriptive study with qualitative approach. For data collection a self-administered questionnaire was prepared, with closed and open questions accessed by platform Google Forms®. The qualitative data were analyzed by Content Analysis in the thematic modality. Results: Thirty-six occupational therapists who work in hospital settings participated. 23 of these directly assisted people with COVID-19. Of the participants, 97% were female; 94.4% worked in in-hospital care, 38.9% in palliative care and 5.56% in out-of-hospital care. The data produced are presented in three thematic categories entitled: “New context of action during the pandemic: between changes and workflow”; “Evaluation, intervention and referrals in Occupational Therapy during the pandemic”; and “The importance of Occupational Therapy in hospital care in the pandemic and in patients with COVID-19”. Final considerations: Recommendations of the international and national health organs adopted by the hospital institutions during the pandemic demanded a new organization of the work, directly impacting the practices of the Brazilian occupational therapists who worked in this context. In the perception of occupational therapists, their work is essential in the rehabilitation of patients affected by covid-19, since the disease has impacts mainly on functionality and mental health, being the professional's focus the re-signification of daily life during the period of hospitalization and illness.
