Abstract

The implementation of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills training at the Psychiatric Institute aims to improve the management of self-injurious behaviors, foster self-control, and strengthen patients’ sense of support. Issues related to emotional dysregulation represent a growing public health concern, both in Chile and globally. Addressing this problem benefits patients and helps manage the high associated costs. Accordingly, this text presents a systematized review of the interventions at the Institute, focusing on the DBT skills training group. The intervention was adapted to the characteristics of the population and required referral from the treatment teams. A closed group of eight participants engaged in 16 weekly sessions of 1.5 hours each, addressing skills such as mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. The results indicate a reduction in self-injurious behaviors, an increase in the sense of support, and improvements in self-control. The intervention has been positively received and is increasingly in demand among users, families, and treatment teams. Although the results are preliminary, they suggest a positive impact on emotional and behavioral well-being. Therefore, it is recommended to generate systematic quantitative evidence to validate these findings.
